Erm. The big problem was that most of them were open by default. Unwittingly.

Are you actually seeing performance hits from 802.11b/g channel
sharing? Or are you just running netstumbler, seeing channels 1-11 all
taken, and assuming nothing going?

It's quite possible for multiple different 802.11b/g networks to exist
on the same channel with only minor problems, assuming low to medium
traffic profiles. If one of the networks is dominating the channel
with 11Mbps of traffic, then you'll see issues, sure.

Don't forget channels 12 & 13. legal in the EU, but rarely
configurable on US kit. You might need to diddle with firmware or
NVRAM setting on your AP, though.
