Thanks for all the information. Yes I do want client side information. It's 
all on our LAN and there's a possibility that I could access ARP tables.
I did find this

which is windows only but I'd like to be able to catch other OSs too. I've 
not tried it yet and was quite surprised to find something. I've not really 
looked at this yet.

Something like
<http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/BgInfo.html>
in php would be great. This requires the user to switch it on and it would 
be great if php could capture this information. There's obviously security 
issues.
