I have a DVD-RAM one.  Speed isn't an issue, DVD-RAM and discs are 
faster than real-time video!

The only real difference is capacity - DVD-RAM is 4Gb, hard drives are a 
lot more than that.  You can playback and record at the same time with 
DVD-RAM and you can edit out the ads (if you have the patience).  If you 
go for long play you can record up to 4 hours on a DVD-RAM disc.  Mine 
will do 8 hours but then the quality isn't much better than VHS.  I have 
a Panasonic one.
