Can you pause tv on a dvd-ram? I didn't think this was possible.
Of course our Humax 8500 dual tuner (or something similar) can do this no problem - but it has a hard disk (and runs linux!)
You're getting stingy about costs? When you need to replace your disks after so many writes, then you'll see the hidden costs.
Plus, we have had three dvd-ram capable Philips/Sony machines, and the drives break after 2 years of medium-high use. You don't want to pause tv with these things.
