Applications > Accessories > Terminal, althought for some reason I have
a feeling it won't be there if your on the latest version, maybe that
was a dream.

If it's not there you can still access a real terminal by going to tty1
Ctrl+Alt+F1, to get back to your GUI Ctrl+Alt+F7. By default you'll be
able to do that from F1-F7 (some people use that for testing different
desktops, e.g. Gnome/KDE on different ttys)

Never used XAMPP so can't help you there, go System > Administration >
Add Applications > File > Advanced and you should be able to see a list
of packages - not sure if the default is setup to check online, I'd
assume so? If GUI's not your thing you could learn these commands:

"apt-cache search apache2" search for software
"apt-get install apache2" - install that software

Cheers,
Dave
