[BNM] Dual core woes

Hi All,
Need some advice regarding Windows XP Pro SP2 and dual core processors.
We built a new machine yesterday using an Asus P5VD1-X motherboard and a Pentium D 820 processor. After updating the BIOS, the motherboard correctly shows that the processor is dual core, however, after installing XP and looking at Task Manager, there is only one processor load graph when I would have expected to see two. In device manager, it shows two processors.
I’ve been through the BIOS and can’t see anything obvious that would disable one of the cores. Hyperthreading is disabled as this isn’t an HT chip. The machine boots if you enable it, but you start to get major problems once you start doing anything processor intensive. I’ve done the usual things like another fresh installation of XP and downloading the latest patches from Windows update but with no joy.
I wondered if anyone has had a similar experience or any words of advice.
TIA.
James.
