[BNM] .htaccess overhead?

Hi there,

I have a client who's host would like to charge an extra £58.75 per annum for password protecting a single directory, when I try and place an .htaccess file in the directory it is denied as an illegal filename.

Before I try and sound too knowledgable about this I thought I had better ask if anyone is aware of any overhead incurred by allowing .htaccess (specifically for this purpose) that might warrant the charge?

I should add that the hosts are not money-grabbing gutbuckets but rather a charity who invest all profits in very good causes and probably see this as a legitimate means for soliciting more 'donations'. Having said that, my client is also working with a tight charity budget.
