If I was you I would try making my own set out of small furry animals. 
You could have mice for pawns, rats for bigger pawns, squirrels for 
bishops... rooks for rooks etc - although it would probably be better if 
all the pieces were more or less on the same level in the food chain etc.

In my experience it can be quite tricky persuading the little shits to 
keep still etc - but I'm sure with a bit of perseverance - communication 
skills etc you could rise to the challenge. I mean a lot of the time, 
the only thing that's missing is sound leadership, strong male 
role-models etc.

I'm also told that if you take (quite a lot of) acid, you can actually 
get them to talk and wear little human-style clothes from the Victorian 
era (that yourself and Mrs Ollie could make), like Toad of Toad Hall 
etc. What could be better? It's got to be worth a try.
