I'm with a private landlord - letting agent was an introductory thing. It  
can be cheaper going private, but does have downsides. My landlord is a  
pilot, and often away for days at a time, meaning he isn't always easy to  
contact. But when something needs doing, it gets done - often not the case  
with an agent.

As long as you check the landlord out first, you should be fine with  
private.
