well strangely enough ive been over there myself a few times and i can
recommend a few things.

1. dont believe the hype about everything electrical being cheaper there -
you can find cheap electric (ie computer orientated) gear but you'll have to
try the off beaten track since the big shopping complexes are well savvyed
up for the western tourist. you could shave off about 10-20% if you know
where to look, but it will have to be places that dont get the western
trade. not knowing exactly where youre going, i cant be any more exact.

2. try a market and get a red chinese lantern. easy to pack and has a
distinctly oriental look about it. careful at the markets themselves -
theyll try to sell you watches and perfrume. i'm sure youll already be
saying no. just smile and walk past.

3. what about a malaysian kite? [1]

4. some spices? you may have some trouble getting them through customs
though.

5. or a blowgun? [2] again same problem as 4.

6. as for what to eat when youre there try here [3] personally i liked the
spicy laksam aya but without the egg.

hope you have a great trip!

best
Alex
