I think it's an example of fallacious argument to accuse people who dislike
chavs of snobbery. The chav is a cultural phenomenon - it's *not* a
shorthand for dismissing all working-class people - which could be loosely
defined as behaving in a hostile manner towards strangers, indulging in
anti-social behaviour and other low-level crime, committing benefit fraud,
etc. Surely nobody would deny that a minority engages in most or all of
these activities, so what is the problem with using a single word as
shorthand to identify such a minority? I suspect most of those who recoil in
horror at the word have no problem with stereotyping the idiots who chase
foxes across the countryside...
