i think they are talking as the devils advocate in this case (hopefully)

basically the argument is:

"why don't the manufacturers go out of their way to help you save energy"

ultimately the responsibility is with us for buying electronics in the
first place AND them for making electronics that manages power poorly.

in fact that's basically the argument generally. the world is full of
lazy people, so the orgs (gov too) should make it their job to make
sure that lazy people can't f*ck it for the rest of the planet.

currently the majority of manufacturers couldn't care less.

if for example all light bulbs were energy efficient and it physically
wasn't possible to buy one that wasn't, that'd make a big change. just
like nick said with the chargers. if they were all built to not draw
power then we wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. thus removing
the responsibility from us so we can concentrate on A. having more fun
and B. changing the world in more meaningful ways.
