[BNM] Fixing IP address

I'd like to force my thinkpad to use a single address; I don't care
which as long as it does not change, so I have told it to use
192.168.254.xxx, gateway 192.168.254.254. mask 255.255.255.0 & DNS
server 192.168.254.254.

When I do this nslookup pretends to fail but gives the correct IP
address, but I can't ping or do anything useful until I revert to auto
IP & DNS which appear to use exactly the same settings.
